Since there was common public knowledge of the fasting girls at the time, and since the situation in "A Hunger Artist" so closely parallels theirs, it is likely that Kafka had heard of them.

Anorexia in Kafka is the necessary precondition for production, yet Kafka is careful never to describe it in gendered terms and questions the validity of that production. Anorexia is more a function of his philosophy of writing than of the writing itself.
