It is now quite easy to make simple light measurements and the vegetation of a cave or couloir can be plotted in relation to the light intensities (Fig. 6). In doing such work it must be remembered that the intensity of light will vary with the time and kind of day and also with the season of the year, so that extended observations are essential if they are to mean anything. ^rcj'Scccus ca'cicola comm FIG. 6. As may be expected, the perennial changes exceed the seasonal ones (Figs. 13). A combination of glass-bottomed view box, grab and aqualung has been used to study the sublittoral algal populations of the Isle of Man (6,33)· Two types of substrate were encountered; continuous rock and sand with shells, or stones and small boulders. The use of the grab was checked by a diver and it was found that it did not always give a complete sample of all species in the area. The use of the aqualung is, in fact, the only effective means of sampling.
