Roger, however, is not one of these gullibles, but a man fully informed about the possibilities of ideological manipulation—he gets paid very well for producing it—and he is therefore dismayed, yet not at all shocked, to find the compromising photograph of himself-as-killer on the front page of Eve’s paper when he believes that in truth he killed nobody.
Indeed, the last bid we hear before the auctioneer calls twenty-two fifty is actually two thousand, so bids can be signaled silently outside our range of vision.
