But with the largest 50+ generation in history entering their mature years, life is about to get even better. With increased longevity adding vital and productive years to our extended lives, we have come to an important crossroads. This book could not have been done without the help of my many colleagues at AARP. John Rother, our policy guru, read drafts, made suggestions, and added accuracy, as did Mike Naylor and David Certner. Marie Smith, Joan Wise, and Hugh Delehanty read and commented on the drafts. Hugh, who is editor-in-chief of AARP publications, knows books and how to write them. He also helped guide the development of the chapters. My thanks also go out to Tom Nelson and Dawn Sweeney, two AARP teammates who encouraged me when so many other things were piling up on the agenda; to Kevin Donnellan, for leading our communications efforts around the book; to Sherla Allen, my valuable assistant, who continually juggled the many demands of my schedule to keep me on track; and to the AARP Board of Directors for their support and encouragement throughout the project.
